Chain of Hope and Uganda Heart Institute - Teaching and training mission and saving children’s lives

Sep. 26, 2019

Chain of Hope has been assisting children requiring cardiac care in Uganda since 2005, initially by bringing children to the UK and Europe through their Child Referral Programme. As part of a long-term strategy to build up a sustainable cardiac service in Uganda, Chain of Hope has carried out yearly training missions since 2011, focusing not only on the treatment of children, but also on the development of the skills of the local team so that eventually they will independently be able to treat all their cardiac children.

Uganda Heart Institute and Chain of Hope’s team were happy to share their knowledge and skills during this mission. This volunteer medical team led by Dr Alan Magee from the University of Southampton, treated 19 children suffering from various heart related disease at the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala. Live-saving procedures were performed on the children, all of whom had been diagnosed with complex heart defects. Abbott supported the mission by providing the devices needed to treat the children. They will now have the chance to grow up and live a normal life.
